Ad Gone Too Far?

June 15, 2011

The Huffington Post recently wrote an article about Yoplait’s recent decision to pull an ad. The National Eating Disorders Association claims the commercial could trigger dangerous behavior for those with an eating disorder.

The commercial begs the question, to eat dessert or not. A skinny friend comes in and grabs a Yoplait yogurt. Thus, the girl debating the dessert goes with the yogurt instead.

“We had no idea,” Tom Forsythe, VP of Corporate Communications for General Mills, said to the Huffington Post. “The thought had never occurred to anyone, and no one raised the point. We aren’t sure that everyone saw the ad that way, but if anyone did, that was not our intent and is cause for concern. We thought it best to take it down.”

When and how does a brand know when they have taken a commercial too far? Do you even think this commercial was offensive? I suspect Yoplait made the right decision, but I wonder if a brand can ever really know if a commercial will not offend at least one person?

Would love to hear your thought under the comments!
