Clear Channel Airports App Makes Use of ‘Searchless Search’

September 2, 2010

We think this is pretty awesome. We plan and buy advertising for two hotels, this could be a great way to reach potential customers at the airport. Likely more effective than the old school ads at the airport baggage claim… you know the ones, with a backlight and a courtesy phone … 🙂

Clear Channel Airports is launching a free, location-based “searchless search” mobile app which will help travelers locate services and amenities in airport terminals. The app will also offer live feeds of arrival and departure info.

The app, FLYsmart, was created in partnership with Geodelic, a Santa Monica-based tech start-up. FLYsmart works by mapping and displaying all the immediate information air travelers need, from news stands, gift shops and restaurants to terminal information, restrooms and more. With a single touch, the map helps travelers navigate concourses, while another touch can show hotels and services around the airport or access information about the surrounding city.

“Airports are always looking to improve the traveler experience and find new ways to garner the attention of transient passengers in promoting food, retail and other concessions,” says Toby Sturek, president of Clear Channel Airports. FLYsmart, he says, does all that “in the most relevant, convenient and contemporary way.”

FLYsmart is available now for free download from iPhones. An Android version is expected to be released soon, as is a BlackBerry version. The app will initially be launched in 10 airports: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas Fort Worth, Denver, Detroit, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Francisco and Seattle. New airports will be added each week.

‘Searchless Search’

Geodelic calls its service the “searchless search,” meaning that the app automatically searches points of interest based on a user’s location.

The company finished raising $7 million in a Series B funding in June, according to VentureBeat.

Clear Channel Airports handles more than 200 display advertising programs in airports in 32 of the top 50 U.S. markets with major airports.
