Academy Awards Over the Years
The Academy Award (now the Oscars) is still one of the most highly viewed programs of the year. Early ratings results for Sunday night’s broadcast of the 83rd Academy Awards ceremony comes to 37.6 million, which falls a bit short of last year’s 41.7 million. Though there was a decrease in Academy Awards viewers both the Grammys and Golden Globes were up this year.
Although there may be several reasons one is pointing to the fact that The Academy Awards had to make do this year without an “Avatar” type movie, a late-season, prize-worthy crowd pleaser that automatically draws an audience to the show. Although this year was filled with great movies such as The King’s Speech,” “The Social Network,” “Black Swan,” etc. ticket sales, the overall box office is down 21 percent so far this year, compared with the same period in 2010.
Also in its quest to draw in the younger crowd, the Oscars turned to James Franco and Anne Hathaway to co-host the 83rd awards show. But the pair’s performance was met with mixed reviews.
